I've been on the lookout for a new job recently and the amount of vacancies are overwhelming. Not all are a perfect match of course, but still. Is there a rule of thumb of how much time you should invest when writing and application letter? I know that reading about the company and writing a letter that really matches the job offer will increase my chances to get invited, but I also know that I will receive a lot of rejections and I'm not sure what the best ratio of investment is. It would be a pity to spend hours on one application when I could have sent out several in that same time to spread my chances. Of course, if I get invited to an interview, I'll do more due diligence and preparation. But how much time is a good investment for the first contact?

Guess who's the first team lead who never had such an email!
